Venice Biennale - Ryan Trecartin
Last week we hung out at the Venice Biennale preview and between all the free coffee and prosecco, saw some good art. Over the next few days we'll be posting our favourite artists so make sure to check back.

Ryan Trecartin's 'Not Yet Titled' video and sculptural installation takes up a whole room of the Arsenale and introduces Massimiliano Gioni's final curatorial section of the show. There are four videos, all referencing reality tv, and each with a sculptural seating arrangement, created with his longtime collaborator Lizzie Fitch. Three of the videos are very typical of Trecartin's work to date; bizarrely facepainted people, no sense of time or location and a very original take on pop culture.
The other video is actual footage taken by Trecartin during his senior year at high school. It's shot in night vision and follows a group of teenagers 'fucking shit up'. The characters in this video are much more real than in his other work, but the editing makes their night seem just as surreal. I never saw MTV show Buckwild but from what I imagine, this video is like a posher Buckwild on acid.
If you're not familiar with his work, watch this old trailer for his PS1 show and you'll have an idea.
