Interview With Cult Gloria
Cult Gloria are one of our favourite brands around right now. Their strong graphic identity and clear vision set them apart from most of everything else that's out there. The classic horror influences are unique and their personal interest in them really shows through in the end products. Thanks to Jonathon Spencer for the images and to the brand's creator / cult leader, Rob Eaton for taking the time to do this interview.
What made you want to start Cult Gloria?
It was back in my first year of university, I moved to Manchester to study but I had a lot of spare time where I felt like I wasn't really being productive or creative with my time. I'd been into streetwear pretty heavy for the past couple years so I decided to start messing around with designs and dropped a really small quantity of tees printed in the city. Set up a webstore and promoted them on my twitter. I didn't really have plans for Cult Gloria back then it was just cool to wear something that I'd designed and even cooler seeing others wearing them. Seeing people post pictures of them online definitely pushed me to actually try and build it into a brand.
I'd say Cult Gloria didn't really start until the the summer last year when the 'Summer 1970' t-shirts dropped which were directly inspired from horror / cult films of that era, that was the first time it felt like I'd released something that I wanted the brand to be based around.
The UK scene seems to be a really strong unit, has this helped? In what ways?
Yeah I definitely agree, the UK scene is sick at the moment, loads of new independent brands emerging putting out loads of cool stuff, making all the other brands push themselves. The Basement, a facebook group / community focused mainly around streetwear, is a great example the sense of community within the UK scene and how the platform can help to get independent brands out there.
What else are you digging out there right now?
Damn, so many. UK wise, my homies at SET, High Jinx and Alcatraz Beach Club are all doing their thing! Recently found Leucotomy, a brand run out of Manchester too which is cool to see, there stuff's also influenced by the darker side of film. Overseas wise though, Stray Rats, BURMA, Friday USA,FTP, The Foulplay Company, The Devinitiesthis list could go on. There's so much good shit out there at the moment. But also I'm getting more into buying like original film merchandise t-shirts from eBay, they go for crazy cheap and the designs are sick!
What's your favourite horror movie? Why?
Suspiria. That's the film that pretty much influenced everything for me, introduced me to Giallo and the world of Cult Horror. It's amazing, like seriously.
What's your favourite cult? Why?
The Satanic cult in Rosemary's Baby is really interesting, creepy old people impregnating Mia Farrow with the spawn of the devil, that stuff's dark. The Heaven's Gate cult is also mad, the whole concept of peoples ability to control the minds of others is mental. Also the visuals that went with there initiation video are crazy, really saturated VHS tapes.
What's next for Cult Gloria?
Right now I'm excited, cant wait to put out more stuff. Currently working on the next release, strengthening the brands image with dark, gothic / heavy graphic inspired streetwear. I'm staying in the city for the majority of the year so I'm going to try and put on a few events, films screening etc. As well as hopefully some collabs.
